The pendulum hardness test evaluates the hardness of a coating by setting a pendulum into oscillation on the coated surface and measuring the time it takes for the oscillation amplitude to decrease by a specified amount. The shorter the damping time, the softer the coating.
Two widely used test procedures are Konig and Persoz, which differ in the period and amplitude of oscillation:
-
Persoz method: Measures the time for the amplitude to decrease from 12° to 4°
-
Konig method: Measures the time for the amplitude to decrease from 6° to 3°
Both methods are based on the same principle — the oscillation of a pendulum in contact with a coating decreases more rapidly on softer surfaces — but differ in their dimensions, oscillation periods, and amplitudes.
The Pendulum Hardness Tester is the latest instrument designed to perform these tests and complies with the following National and International Standards:
-
ISO 1522
-
ASTM D4366
-
BS 3900-E5
-
DIN 53157
-
NBN T22-105
-
NF T30-016
The instrument is simple to operate and is available in three model options: Persoz, Konig, or Persoz & Konig combined.
