Why ASTM B117 Test Panels Are Essential

The ASTM B117 salt spray test is one of the most widely used corrosion testing standards. To achieve repeatable and reproducible results, it is vital to check the corrosivity of the chamber using ASTM B117 test panels. During continuous operation, apparatus verification should be carried out every 3 months.

Preparation of the Test Panels

  1. Clean panels by degreasing only to remove oil, dirt, or contaminants.
  2. Weigh each panel to the nearest 1.0mg using an analytical balance and record the mass.

Correct Arrangement in the Test Chamber

  • Use a minimum of two test panels.
  • Place panels at a 15°–30° angle from vertical.
  • Position close to the salt fog collection funnels, with spacing at least 100mm from chamber walls.
  • Supports must be inert, such as plastic (optional accessory ACC16 available).
